There is no single best month for a river cruise — there is a best month for each river and each traveler. Here is how Mister Cruise thinks about seasons, crowds and water levels.

River by River

  • Danube and Rhine: spring through December, with Christmas markets in late November and December.
  • Seine: spring through autumn; spring is lovely for Giverny’s gardens.
  • Rhône: spring to autumn; lavender in early summer.
  • Douro: roughly spring to late autumn; harvest in September and early October.
  • Nile: autumn through spring, avoiding the hottest summer months.
  • Mekong: generally the cooler, drier months; routes vary with water levels.
  • Mississippi: spring and autumn are most comfortable; autumn color on the Upper Mississippi.

Understanding Water Levels

River cruising depends on the river. After heavy snowmelt or rain, water can rise too high for ships to pass under old bridges; in a long dry spell, it can drop too low in shallow stretches. Late summer and early autumn are the most common times for low water on some European rivers, and spring for high water, but it is unpredictable from year to year.

The good news: lines deal with it routinely, and most cruises sail as planned. Mister Cruise’s advice is simple — buy travel insurance, keep your plans a little flexible, and book with someone who will keep an eye on things for you. Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the river is too high or too low?

Lines have plans for this. After heavy rain, ships may not fit under bridges; in a dry spell, the water may be too shallow in places. The usual responses are a revised route, a ship swap with another vessel past the problem section, or a coach transfer. Booking through an advisor means someone is watching on your behalf.

Is summer too hot for a river cruise?

Central Europe is usually pleasant in summer, but heat waves happen, and southern rivers such as the Douro and Rhône can be very hot in July and August. Spring and early autumn are cooler and often quieter.

When is the cheapest time to go?

Early spring and late autumn sailings are often priced below peak summer and holiday dates. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can show you how prices vary across dates for the itinerary you like.
